The draw plate is designed to almost fully block off the opening to your fire. When in place, it creates a 'rush' of air, which is drawn upwards through the bottom of the fire, creating a strong supply of oxygen. This 'boost' of oxygen is often what is needed to succesfully start the perfect fire.
